What a perfect gift right before the holidays–the birth of a sweet, cuddly, adorable baby! Today’s post is part one of this newborn session, in which we did a Christmas theme with twinkle lights. So pretty!
I wonder if baby is dreaming of dancing sugar plums…
How sweet baby’s first Christmas will be!
Baby looks like a cute little lumberjack with his red plaid hat and pants, surrounded by pine garland!
Who can resist a smiling baby? If this doesn’t bring a smile to your face, I don’t know what will!
This sweet little baby makes his mommy and daddy’s heart sing.
Daddy is a musician, so naturally we took a moment during the newborn session for a song to baby.
It was so precious seeing baby watch his daddy play the guitar. He really seemed to enjoy it!
And of course, we had to pose baby with daddy’s guitar–how cool is that?
Another sweet family moment.
I really like in-home newborn sessions; they are so natural and relaxed.
Mom had a photo from when she was a baby just like this, and it was really neat to be able to recreate it for her baby.

It’s a common thing to see on the websites of many newborn photographers; newborn sessions ideally should take place when baby is between 5-10 days old. The reason photographers say this is because when babies are younger than 10 days old, they are sleepier, like being swaddled, and are still easily curled up into womb-like poses. These factors often make for an easier newborn session. But what if your baby is past that age? What if you didn’t think about newborn photos until after baby was born, or didn’t think you wanted to have professional photos taken but changed your mind? What if you had a difficult delivery and just didn’t feel up to a session right away? Does that mean it’s too late? Certainly not! It’s never too late to have beautiful photos of your new baby.
I’ve photographed babies who were two weeks old, three weeks old, a month old, and more. Today’s post features a 3 month old baby; not quite newborn, but still so small and new!
It’s still a great time to document all those delicate little features that you never want to forget.
The most important thing is to capture the love and connection you have with your child.
At this age, it’s important to understand that there are some popular newborn poses that you might not get; babies often don’t like to be swaddled at this age; they like to stretch out, and they are much more awake, so certain poses are definitely out. Arms and legs are very much in motion, so it takes some extra time to get the shot–but with patience, it will come together! Typically, this is the kind of pose that you will get at this age, with baby on his or her back on the beanbag. Sleepy and curled up? No. Awake and adorable? Yes! And if you are lucky, you may even get some smiles, since babies are more expressive at this age.
I would say that the very best images that you get at this age are when baby is held by parents; they are fully supported in a lovely pose, and the interaction between baby and parents is so precious.
If your baby is older than the “typical” age for a newborn session, don’t let that stop you from scheduling your session. It’s never too late to have beautiful photos of your baby!! Book your session with my online scheduler, or if you prefer, contact me to set something up.
Milestone mini sessions are such a great way to document your baby’s growth during their first year! Whether you go by ages (i.e. 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, and 1 year) or you go by stages (smiling, rolling over, sitting up, touching toes, crawling, cruising, and walking), it’s so satisfying and heartwarming to have all those moments captured before they are gone. Babies change so much in their first year!
At 6 months old, many babies are able to start sitting up without assistance, and their personalities are really starting to shine. This is a perfect time for photos because they are happy and smiling for photos, but not able to run away yet!
Dads need to be in photos, too!
Oh, hi Dad!
How long will baby be small enough (and hold still long enough) for mom to hold him like this? Freeze these moments in time!
Playing with my baby’s feet was one of my favorite games–and hers, too.
Look, ma–I’m flying!

Such a wonderful couple that I had the pleasure of working with again when I was invited back to take newborn photos of their second child. Their first newborn session took place at my studio; this time they decided to have their newborn session at home. I find that a lot of my clients have their second newborn session in the home, because it’s more relaxed and easier on their first born child. I also love photographing a baby in their home environment, wrapped up in their own swaddle blanket It’s all part of the memory!
Baby was relaxed and sleepy, allowing to capture this very natural newborn pose.
I love every little detail about baby, down to the peach fuzz on their ears. One proud papa.
